At After the Storm, we recognise that many treatment programs are only the beginning of any recovery journey or lasting change, therefore, aftercare is very important to us.

All programming is designed to provide a solid base with which to support long-term and lasting change.  From the first week clients arrive, one of the regular activities built into the schedule is a specific discussion around planning for a client’s exit from After the Storm and creating as smooth a transition as possible back to a client’s home environment.  These “Transition Planning” discussions are aimed at raising awareness around resources offered at and through learnings at After the Storm as well as in a client’s hometown (such as trauma therapists), acknowledging and planning to circumvent barriers a client might reasonably face (also called “Relapse Prevention”), and while our program remains consciously open to any and all forms of recovery groups (for example, Alcoholics Anonymous or S.M.A.R.T. recovery), encouraging establishing membership and participation in a group and participation (perhaps attending online while at After the Storm, and in-person on return home).

When a client has graduated from our program, for the first few months after completion of our program, they will further be offered a scheduled appointment with our clinical director as a check-in each month.

As a destination recovery center, in order to maintain accessibility, After the Storm offers virtual Alumni Meetings.

You will co-create a Transition Plan during the program, including establishing a follow-up communications plan that works for you.

You will be offered virtual access to your counselor for one 30-minute session per month, for the first three months after the end date of their program. You will be invited to monthly Alumni recovery meetings, either on Zoom or in person.

  • We strongly recommend that you purchase emergency travel medical insurance for the entirety of your time at After the Storm. It is the client’s responsibility to purchase and maintain up-to-date and adequate coverage.
  • Some client already have travel medical coverage through insurance providers or credit cards, but if you would like support in purchasing travel coverage we would be happy to connect you with a local provider.

You are also responsible for maintaining up-to-date and valid travel documentation and any required and applicable travel visas, immunizations, or other required documentation. The Center is not liable or responsible for the client being denied entry or exit from any location or country.
